Vjetrenica, “wind cave” or “blowhole”, is the largest and most important cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the most important caves in the Dinaric Alps, mountain range, which is famous worldwide for its karst and speleological riches. It is bordering Dubrovnik area, thus providing opportunity to explore diversity of the area.

The Vjetrenica Cave has all the ingredients to enjoy, learn and experiencing surprises. You will feel a pleasant fresh wind at the entrance, decorated with beautiful petrogliphs. It is the richest cave in the world in terms of subterranean biodiversity with more than two hundred different species are registered in it.
The visiting sector of the cave has large size galleries with a path from which you will be able to admire gorgeous speleothems (stalactites, stalagmites, columns, cascade-like flowstone formations, calcite gours) and lakes with the olm (proteus anguinus), the only cave-dwelling chordate species found in Europe.
The total length of discovered channels is about 6,230m, which about 500m is walkable and illuminated (walking tour takes about one hour). The cave has many corridors, halls, lakes and waterfalls as well as a multitude of tiny animal species adapted to life in the underworld. The Big Lake is the longest (about 180m) where numerous endemic species have found their home. It is the richest cave in the world in terms of subterranean biodiversity. Main channel of the cave cuts 2,5 km deep into the earth and could stretch right to the Adriatic Sea. The cave entrance is located in village of Zavala, where monuments and ruins witness unique mixture of Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Oriental civilizations. You can feel the first dashes of Mediterranean standing on the doors of continent beyond.
