If you were visiting Dubrovnik, at those times, The Republic of Ragusa, from any part of the world that was taken by some infectious disease, like leprosy, a decree was issued which foreced that everyone had to spent 40 days in the quarantine before allowed into the city. Only when proven that a person is not ill, they would let them in.
