Did you know that our lovely walled city of Dubrovnik was the first town to introduce quarantine?
It happened, back in 1377, due to a lot of infectious diseases trough Europe at the time, and the fact that Dubrovnik was a maritime trade town, it made the goverment to think about health of its citizens.

Do you know the meaning of the word Quarantine?

If you were visiting Dubrovnik, at those times, The Republic of Ragusa, from any part of the world that was taken by some infectious disease, like leprosy, a decree was issued which foreced that everyone had to spent 40 days in the quarantine before allowed into the city. Only when proven that a person is not ill, they would let them in.
Latin was an official language of Dubrovnik at the time, and 40 in latin is quadraginta, hence the quarantine!

The quarantine building is still there, one from a bit later construction, which can be easily reached whilst we take you on a stroll of the Old Town alleys.
Although it is not used for the same purpose anymore. Today it hosts the cultural events, medditeranien food fairs, dance rehersals and even a night club, and once you enter the club you got the feeling of being quarantined with all the happy people :D
